Personnel Preventative Maintenance Program

Burnout is Rarely Sudden
It often affects your most loyal, committed, and driven employees

... and it is completely avoidable

Does your organisation have a more comprehensive preventative maintenance plan for your equipment than you do for your people?

The Performastery Personnel Preventative Maintenance Program (PPMP) provides a framework for fostering an environment where employees can perform at their best as often as possible, for as long as possible.

Just like scheduled maintenance for machinery, the PPMP ensures that your most valuable assets—your people—are supported to thrive, not just survive.

By recognising burnout as a lag indicator of unrealistic expectations, organisations can take proactive steps to prevent it, ensuring a sustainable, high-performing workforce for the long term.

Why Burnout is a Lag Indicator of Unrealistic Expectations

Over the years, while working with more than 2,000 supervisors, one striking observation stands out: many organisations have more comprehensive preventative maintenance plans for their equipment than for their people!!!

For instance, machinery like road graders or lawn mowers is routinely serviced after a set number of hours or kilometres - oil changes, greasing, and inspections ensure peak performance. Yet, the human operating that machinery? They’re often expected to keep going indefinitely, with no scheduled “maintenance” to keep them running at their best.

Some might argue, “Humans don’t need scheduled maintenance - that’s what holidays and rostered days off are for.” But consider this:

  • How many employees in your organisation are on the "naughty list" for excessive accrued leave?

  • Are they on that list because of genuine concern for their well-being? Or because the organisation wants to mitigate financial risk?

In reality, organisations often expect employees to take care of their own maintenance: sleep well, eat nutritiously, stay hydrated and maintain mental, physical, and emotional well-being.

But humans aren’t machines. They have good days and bad days, periods of high resilience, and stretches of exhaustion. Without intentional interventions, inconsistencies in human performance are inevitable.

Burnout: The Silent Consequence of Unrealistic Expectations

Burnout is rarely sudden. It creeps in slowly, like the proverbial boiling frog. It often affects your most loyal, committed, and driven employees—those who consistently prioritise the needs of their teams and the organisation above their own. For these employees, burnout builds over months or years, as they shoulder the weight of unrealistic workloads and expectations.

One day, they wake up unable to keep going. By then, it’s too late—they’re “cooked.”

So, who holds responsibility for preventing burnout? Is it the employee or the employer?
The answer is both. Whilst employees are ultimately responsible for their choices, actions and wellbeing, employers have a critical role to play in creating systems and processes that support their workforce, just as they do for their equipment. This involves integrating preventative maintenance practices into:
Workforce planning, succession planning, talent retention strategies, and leadership development pathways.

The Solution: Personnel Preventative Maintenance Program (PPMP)

The Performastery’s Personnel Preventative Maintenance Program (PPMP) provides a framework for fostering an environment where employees can perform at their best as often as possible, for as long as possible.

For Senior Managers and Directors, their team’s performance is a top priority. But high levels of burnout among team members can jeopardise: operational continuity, employee morale, talent retention, and long-term organisational success.

The PPMP is designed to address these challenges by equipping leaders with the tools to identify burnout early, optimise team capacity, and realign priorities to improve productivity while safeguarding employee well-being.

Fiona delivered a meaningful and insightful program for our leaders and has directly impacted our company culture and leadership positively. Our business and team are better for the learning. I highly recommend Fiona to anyone looking to grow their teams and leaders.
